I seem to have been a supporter of Greenpeace for a very long time. Inspired by my brother who became a supporter in the early nineties, I responded to an ad in the Guardian which simply said ‘Thank God someone’s Making Waves.’ And I guess I’ve been making waves ever since, some larger than others, some just little ripples really. But it’s little ripples that go on to make more ripples in places you’d never imagine. I even met my husband at a Greenpeace meeting, and much to the puzzlement of my parents, our wedding cake had a beautifully sculpted Rainbow Warrior in icing on top!
What inspires me so much about Greenpeace? The non-negotiable non-violence is a key core value for me. That and just going out there and getting things done, the things we all know deep down to be right.
My day job is very much in-keeping with Greenpeace values, as a Development Education Worker with a small not-for-profit organisation which is trying to make the world a fairer place through education for change. Change to a world where power and resources are more equally shared among the world’s people and human rights are respected. A tall order? Maybe, but at least no-one can say I haven’t tried!
When I’m not trying to save the world (is there ever off-duty time?) I enjoy cycling, gardening and trying out new vegan recipes on my husband and father-in-law.
