Gilbert MorreyMy name is Gilbert Morrey, and I will soon be 69 years old. I have two sons and two grandchildren. I became a Greenpeace supporter over 30 years ago when I was working at Leicester Polytechnic, teaching statistics. There was concern about climate change even then, and this is probably still my main focus. I believe radical change needs to occur in many areas of society. Protection of the environment is the least controversial of these, making Greenpeace an important catalyst for change.

In 1983-4 I did a teacher exchange to the USA, exchanging to a Community College near the Canadian border. In the summer of 1984 we took an eight week trip to California and back, camping in state and National Parks, seeing natural wonders and other tourist attractions.

In 1994 I took early retirement and my wife and I moved to a small island off the west coast of county Donegal, which had no roads, and no electricity or water supply. There was also no ferry so we needed our own boat. The island had been home to over 30 families, but at that time only 4 houses were occupied all year round. We were there for 4 years before family illness encouraged us to return. I subsequently did some part time work for the University of York and the Open University, and we settled in Scarborough, where I am the joint co-ordinator of the Yorkshire Coast Group. My hobbies are gardening and folk dancing.
