Reaction: EU phase out palm oil from biofuels

Publication date: 14th June 2018

Responding to the news that the EU Parliament has voted for a complete phase-out of palm oil use in transport by 2030, John Sauven Executive Director of Greenpeace UK said:

“Chopping down rainforests in Southeast Asia to grow palm oil for ‘biofuels’ in Europe is completely nonsensical and does nothing to help stop climate change. 2030 is still 12 years away. Deforestation is causing havoc with our climate now, and will make iconic animals like the orangutan extinct. The EU should have helped end deforestation by prioritising land for food not fuel.”
