Greenpeace reaction to Labour’s deceleration of a Climate Emergency
Commenting on Labour’s declaration of a Climate and Environmental emergency at DEFRA oral questions, Mel Evans, Senior Climate Campaigner of Greenpeace UK, said:
It’s clearly significant that Labour are declaring a climate emergency and we’d urge the government and other major parties follow suit. No UK politicians can now ignore the growing public demand for immediate, radical action. A Climate emergency can’t just be a slogan so the key question remains – what are Labour going to do about it?
To live up to the challenges of the climate emergency Labour’s strong rhetoric must be matched with ambitious policies. From halting all new coal, oil and gas development and quitting Heathrow expansion, to committing to planting 30 million trees per year, climate emergency policies will require some bold actions from Labour. Anything less will fail to truly get to grips with the realities of the climate and environmental emergency.
