The UK’s biggest energy company, Centrica, has donated tens of thousands of dollars to a Texas-based climate denial think tank strongly linked to Donald Trump’s new energy secretary Rick Perry, Energydesk has revealed.

Centrica, which owns British Gas and is a major investor in UK fracking, has made a number of donations to the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) over the last five years and says it has no plans to stop.

World's biggest energy bill blocks the entrace to Centrica's HQ

Since we shut down their head office on Monday, British Gas owner Centrica have replied to the thousands of people who emailed them about their overreliance on gas, their lack of investment in renewables and their failure to bring energy bills under control. But whilst they talk a good game, their spin fails to address the real issues.

A deal in the desert involving the British prime minister, British Gas owner Centrica and the Kingdom of Qatar may seem more like the plot of a low-budget movie than a key factor shaping household bills. But with the UK’s production of natural gas dwindling fast, in 2011 Centrica executives headed for Qatar – the world’s largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to secure UK gas supplies.

Across the UK millions of families and businesses are feeling the economic squeeze.

As anybody who has recently received their bill for last winter will be painfully aware, soaring costs of energy are a huge reason for this.

Shocking new analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance for Greenpeace, shows that most of the Big Six energy utilities haven’t been investing money from customer bills in a way that brings energy prices under control and secures a clean energy supply for the UK.
