This is what an unstoppable movement looks like

Last Saturday, more than 10,000 of us in more than 280 cities came together in a declaration of love for the Arctic. Thousands of volunteers, all around the world, speaking with one voice to send a clear message to politicians: the Arctic belongs to everyone.

Before I got involved in my local Greenpeace group, I remember thinking, am I the only person who cares about this? Today, I know that I'm part of an unstoppable movement to protect the planet from greed. Greenpeace is founded in the passion and dedication of volunteers. Real people taking real actions to help solve the biggest problems facing the world. Now, the whole world is feeling the affects of what's happening in the Arctic and time is short. But when we come together, we show the world that we can achieve the impossible.

Last Saturday, at more than 25 events across the UK, volunteers helped raise awareness of the threats to the Arctic, talking to members of the public, taking photographs and making giant human banners that spelt out “I ♥ Arctic”.The day culminated in a massive effort from volunteers and donated equipment that saw the Arctic come to life in London - testament to the collective creativity of passionate people.

Everybody’s busy and there’s so much news coming at people from so many different angles, which is why real conversations matter now more than ever. When you’re campaigning for something you believe in you genuinely come away from it at the end of the day feeling that you’ve made a difference.

It takes more than money, petitions and emails to stop the most powerful companies in the world. Every action helps, but nothing beats the collective action of dedicated people on the ground. And that's why you're needed now.

Help the movement grow by joining your local group here

When the messages collected from around the world are presented to the group of Arctic nations in Sweden, on May 15, they will know that the world is watching. They need to know that we're not going to stop until the Arctic, and the planet, is safe from greed. You can make that happen.

About Rachael

I work in the Outreach Team at Greenpeace, helping to support, motivate and inspire our fantastic volunteer activists. I am a Network Developer, with specific responsibility for managing, supporting and developing networks in London, the South-East, East of England and also Scotland. I also manage our Greenspeakers network.

I started as a volunteer myself, getting involved with and then co-ordinating the Islington Network back in 2004 and volunteering in the office on a regular basis until my first job at Greenpeace came up. I’m still an active activist and truly believe that we can bring about change to make the world a better place.
