Make a NOise!
Posted by bex on 8 April 2008.
Help create the biggest and loudest NO the world has ever seen!
The campaign against Heathrow expansion is already huge; there've been rallies, direct actions, flash mobs and an incredible 70,000 responses to the consultation (more on that shortly).
But an agenda for colossal airport expansion and colossal climate change demands a colossal response, and we want to make sure the plans to expand Heathrow receive the biggest and loudest NO the world's ever seen. Literally. A great big NO spelt out by human bodies, which we'd like to set a new world record as the biggest and loudest NO in the world.
And we'd like you to be a part of it. You're invited to a carnival on Saturday 31st May, which will make its way from Hatton Cross Tube Station (Piccadilly Line, 12pm) to Sipson, the village that will be wiped out if Heathrow expansion goes ahead. At the end, you'll have the chance to help form the giant NO before hearing from speakers sending the message to the government that the proposals simply can't go ahead.
The carnival comes ahead of the government's verdict on Heathrow, due in June or July. The government is wobbling over the decision and we want to make sure it feels the full weight of public opposition. While BAA doesn't need much help in proving its own incompetence, there's still a danger that the government will hand over significant control of the future of the planet to a company that has trouble looking after our hand luggage.
It's not just a NO to Heathrow expansion; it's a no to increased climate change, to increased noise and pollution, and to homes being destroyed.
So we, along with HACAN Clear Skies, NoTRAG, 2M (representing local authorities and four million people across London) and the Campaign Against Climate Change, are inviting you to get involved. The official make-a-noise.org website will be launching soon, although you can already sign up for emails about the carnival.
And, if you haven't already, you can still write to Gordon Brown and join the Stop Heathrow Expansion group on Facebook, where all event details and updates will be posted.

Whoop! can't wait.
Finally some direct action I can attend, will definately be there and I'll probably bring along some friends and a big banner.
I'll travel by train of course.
Unfortunatly I cannnot sign up to emails as I do not have an email address compatible with outlook express.
No excuses- No more airport expansion.

Hopefully I'll be able to make it.. first one ever!! Been wanting to for ages, but most times job didn't allow it :(
Everyone make sure you go to the toilet before losing yourself in the big pile of people :)
Heathrow Expansion and Climate Change
As an American I am always amused by the subtle British sense of humor. Forming a great big "NO" strikes me the same way as did The Royal Society for Putting Things On Top Of Other Things. It is utterly sily and useless, but really quite funny.
I quote from your e-mail:
"An agenda for colossal airport expansion and colossal climate change demands a colossal response, and we want to make sure the plans to expand Heathrow receive the biggest and loudest NO the world's ever seen."
Adding a runway at Heathrow will make no difference at all in the climate, and I am sure that the more intelligent people among you know that to be true. And yet, when it comes to the great global warming debate, Greenpeace persists in treating the general public as if they are universally stupid and gullible. It demeans your organization to do so.
From an environmental point of view, adding a third runway at Heathrow will increase the speed at which aircraft can be handled by the airport, and there wll be less "idling time" on the ground by aircraft waiting to take off.
House rules
Hey folks
I've deleted two comments for breaking our house rules - please remember, no personal attacks.

We have 79 months to act or we fry.
This is not just about heathrow, if we allow this runway then it will be major blow to the climate because Airport expansion and therefore flight will increase exponentially. Emmisions from aircraft account for 13.5% of UK greenhouse gas emmisions (government figure).
Now Dan adding an extra 900 flights a day to and from heathrow which is 328500 extra flights a year certainly would make a difference to the climate, also think of all the oil which they'd burn especially as we are nearing peak oil aswell. T5 at heathrow was meant to reduce handling time of aircraft, what a success that was eh?
The peer reviewed science says we have until 2015 to curb GHG emissions or we fry that is 79 months away. More flights is a step in the wrong direction.

heathrow expansion....
a big NO please....
Erm..... Incorrect
Firstly, I do admire what you are doing, we do have to do something about climate change. But, there are some things that you are not going to change. People need to be places, fast. Air travel is that solution. Also air travel only com-tributes to the worlds CO2 by 3% (Real figure). T5 does reduce handling time and is more environmentally friendly since there is not such a distance to taxi. We do need a 3rd runway, any UK citizen who says we don't obviously doesn't watch the news and realize that we need this for our poor economy. We at the moment are losing flights to other forgein airports like Charles D'Gaulle, even if somehow the 3rd runway isn't build it will be built at Stansted. Sorry, to tell you this but, protest about something which won't damage our very fragile economy.
Heathrow Expansion
Will everyone in favour of further expansion at Heathrow kindly confirm which part of the flightpath they live under? Can they also confirm that they are okay to forget about any social gatherings in their gardens and are happy with 5 hours sleep a night? Oh, and how's your hearing?
We moved here 20 years ago. Then, aircraft started taking off and landing at 7AM, changed over at 3PM, and were all finished by 11PM latest. It was acceptable, even with Concorde. Now that there is no more space available in the air, and BAA have already hit the T5 cap on flights, BAA wants a 3rd runway capacity and 700,000 flights. Why? If you want to be an out of town shopping centre, then become one, but don't expect us to give up our homes or any semblence of resale value because a plane load of passengers from another country want to buy bottles of duty free perfume.
Safety margins between aircraft are there to protect us all, and BAA are putting us all at risk. January 2008 should have been a wake up call - what if the pilot had lost power a minute earlier? Allowing mixed mode, more night flights, and scrapping runway alternation is not the answer, nor is a 3rd runway. The place is overcrowded, today, above, on, and below the ground. It's reached it's capacity, it's full. The smallest incident causes meltdown, the surrounding roads a nightmare.
Why do aircraft regularly de-alternate - perhaps because the line of traffic has got too close together in the air, aircraft are running out of fuel, or because the landing aircraft couldn't get off the runway fast enough as his parking slot was still occupied. Heathrow needs SPARE capacity, to be used ONLY in an emergency, but BAA keep using it up. If you keep pushing the flight envelope, eventually something will break. It's just a question of when. This January, we were VERY lucky.
My vote at the next election will go to the MP who is against further expansion at Heathrow and fights to stop it. It's become that simple.
IT'S NOT for the Economy, Stupid.
To anyone who claims that we need a third runway for the sake of the economy is not up to date. British Airways have announced that they are going to be grounding flights from October due to fuel costs and the need to ensure that planes are flying using their full capacity for passengers.
In other words, they are not going to be flying half empty planes so often. This will bring down the choice of flights, and as fuel prices increase, (inevitable as oil prices will never come down) there will be less demand and therefore less need of capacity.
Building a third runway when airlines all over the world are going bust is a piontless exercise, don't you think?
