Update, 14 April: We did it! Greenpeace smashed the world record for comments on a Facebook post with a total of 80,027 in 24 hours.

While many of us squander productive hours on the Facebook monster, today there's something useful and important you can do on the social network: set a world record and help push the internet giant off coal.

For the next 24 hours, as part of our 'Unfriend Coal' campaign, we need you to leave a comment on the campaign page here:

www.facebook.com/UnfriendCoal

That's it.

If we do it collectively more than 50,000 times we'll have broken a world record and sent Facebook another strong message that we don't want dirty and dangerous energy powering our social spaces.

We'll be taking your comments and broadcasting them live to a scrolling screen outside the company office so that the staff can't ignore us. If you need another reason to do it, the 50 best commenters will win an 'Unfriend Coal' t-shirt (I can hear you scrambling for your keyboards already).

Here are a few tips to help set the record:

  • You have to 'like' www.facebook.com/UnfriendCoal to comment
  • Comment multiple times - every one counts
  • "@nametag" ten friends in the comment so they can join in the record too.
  • Share the link on your profile
  • Keep your comments relevant - talk about Facebook and renewable energy. Address your message to Facebook staff. Ask questions. Give opinions. Spark debate. Tell your story!

Why now? Because we gave Facebook an Earth Day deadline (April 22nd) to announce they're going coal-free and that date is fast approaching. As of yet, there's been no sign from Facebook that they plan to replace dirty coal and nuclear with clean, renewable energy.

If you want a bit of perspective, just two of Facebook's data centres consume the same amount of electricity as over 65,000 average American homes. We're asking Facebook to power those data centres - and all future ones - with renewable energy, and to 'unfriend' dirty coal and dangerous nuclear power.

So if you're a Facebook user, log in, speak your mind and be part of today's global push for a world record. Not bad for three minutes of your Wednesday.
