Why 350 is the magic number

The folks behind the 350 campaign have just launched a brand new website: 350.org with an amazing video that spells out what 350 parts per million is about in 90 seconds without using a single word.

What's the significance of 350? Well, 350 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere is the magic figure that, according to top NASA climate scientist James Hansen, is the level at which our planet has sustained life for millions of years. But in recent years, of course, the amount of atmospheric CO2 has risen. It's currently at about 385 parts per million and rising. This is already too high for comfort, and if it rises much above 400 ppm could pose a significant threat to the future of our planet.

This campaign is to raise awareness about 350 ppm and to influence the annual UN conference on climate change which will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark next year. Congratulations to the team behind 350 for spreading the word as widely as possible on their multi-lingual website and via their wordless video.
